Microadventures with Fort Whyte Alive

One of the things I love about living in Winnipeg is how accessible nature is. Not only are there beautiful little wooded pockets to be found all over, but you're never more than a quick drive from some fresh country air.

The weekly Alive Adventures at FortWhyte are a prime example of this kind of accessibility. Every Wednesday from now until August 26th, FortWhyte gives you an opportunity to get outside, participate in a fun activity and unwind with a few beers in front of a fire.

Last Wednesday my friends LindseyRachel and I joined a group instructed by Will Tarleton on the art of hatchet throwing. We experimented with different throws - overhand, underhand, the side throw, the toss up. Mostly we laughed at our hilarious lack of skill, revelled in the beautiful sunlight and danced to avoid mosquitoes (NOTE: Bug repellent is a must - Mama Pacha makes a great one available at Vita Health). It was beautiful, it was fun, and it made me feel like a (slightly awkward) bad ass.

Every weekend features a different wilderness activity. You can learn more about each one and sign up at FortWhyte's website. If you're really interested in hatchet throwing and are sorry to have missed it, you can contact Will through FortWhyte to arrange a private demonstration with a small group of friends.
